About The Area - Bykey wall history
The Byker Wall, a significant historical feature in Byker, has a rich history that dates back to its foundation by the Roman Emperor Severus nearly 1600 years ago. The wall was repaired and expanded at Byker, east of Newcastle, to maintain the highways. The Byker Estate, which includes the Byker Wall, was completed in 1982 and replaced dilapidated Victorian terraced housing, preserving the community spirit. The estate is home to around 9,500 people and includes the East End Library, opened in 2000 by Newcastle Libraries. The Byker Wall is now regarded as a site of architectural interest, reflecting the area's industrial and social history.
